It is no secret that Anne McCaffrey has been one of my favorite authors of all time. I think it is within this decade that I was in a bookstore in Reno that had some pretty good deals. They told me that they had just received a huge collection of First Edition Anne McCaffrey's books. I nearly passed it up. I've never been rich monetarily. I figured I wouldn't be able to afford it. But being a store that wanted to keep their merchandise moving, they actually quoted me a price for the whole collection that I could afford. But I was working and found that reading "real" or "tree" books hard for my eyes. And I was always tired with fibromyalgia. So the books sat on my shelves.
When we moved here the McCaffreys sat in a box until I got a new bookshelf. Now they are out on display so I can't resist. Except reading the old way is slow. So I try to keep my paper bookmark where I am in the Kindle version and read a bit when I can.
Luckily, I've been collecting the Kindle versions of Anne's treasures. At least this one has text-to-speech. I kind of hoped for Audible but they don't have this book. It's okay as I can speed up the listen-rate to 2x and get through a book in no time.
As much as I looked forward to Acorna, who wouldn't want to read a story about a unicorn girl? I have to admit that as much as I love her writing style, I found this book wasn't so much about the girl as it was about child slavery and the men who found the girl. You never get to see her point of view, even when she grows up. Still, Ms. McCaffrey and Ms. Ball cover the issues well and made a good story. I am already into the next book and I see the plot continues with other people. Acorna is still not showing up personally. Maybe that will change soon.
I still liked the book and can't wait to see what happens in the series.

Acorna Unicorn Girl Anne McCaffrey 9780606255202 Books Reviews
I first read Acorna when I was about 18 years old. Now that I am older and have seen more of the world I prefer a little lighter reading. Still, Acorna is so well done that I go back to it at times. Very worthwhile reading.
It's a good story if you like chase, run, chase, run. But as an Anne McCaffrey fan, I was dissappointed. I like the Pern books better - more about building a decent society together than about dealing with people who are bent on destroying everything and making the world a miserable place to live in. I like more upbeat stories, and the Pern story line is much more of that. Even the Crystal Line books were better. They had that element of danger this one has, but the danger was coming from nature, not from a really sick mind (or group of them). I don't like to read about people or organizations whose minds are just turned to manure, as the enemy in this book is. It's waayyyyy too depressing. The PERN books and her CRYSTAL LINE books are so much more uplifting.
"Acorna" is the first book in the Acorna series, and I have enjoyed all of this series. The Sci-fi story of the space adventures, of a very unusual young orphan "girl", could only come from the imagination of Anne McCaffrey. Anne and her co-writers, always tell an imaginative, exciting, well thought out story, with compelling characters. Be sure to check out the "Crystal Singer" series, as well as all the rest of the books written by McCaffrey and her co-writers. I started my journey, with the author's books, about 25 years ago, when I read "Restoree" for the first time. I have all the McCaffery books in paperback, and also Robin Wood's "The People of Pern". It is a compilation of Wood's art, depicting the inhabitants of McCaffrey's world of Pern, along with a brief discription of each character, which makes the reading of the Pern books even more enjoyable. Young and old can enjoy the works of McCaffrey.
This is a science fiction story that takes place at an unknown time in the future, when space travel is as normal as air travel is in our time. The heroine of the story, Acorna, is a female alien discovered and raised by three asteroid miners. They end up on a planet that depends on an illegal child slave system for its economic prosperity, and Acorna enlists the aid of some unlikely friends to rescue the suffering and abused children.
While previous reviews have said that this is mainly written for youth, it should be noted that there are references made to houses of ill repute that use children in their business, and these parts may not be appropriate for very young readers. Although the audience that will probably enjoy this book the most is young people, the story nonetheless puts a very bright spotlight on the subject of human trafficking, which is an unfortunate reality in our world, even in what is considered wealthy countries.
This is an easy book to read, and should be good for anyone who wants something light, but entertaining, for a day at the beach or a night by a fire. I had read this book once before, and also a couple others in the series (this is the first of ten), but I found that, though it is easy, and even tempting, to skip ahead and read too fast, this is not a good idea if one wants to get all the details, for things tend to happen quickly in this story, and the omission of even a couple of paragraphs might be enough to miss a major event that will become important in the following books. And, believe me, you will want to read the other books. Acorna’s adventures can become addicting.
