“A twist on the traditional hero’s tale, with Science Fiction crashing into Fantasy in a way that Weisser makes his own, this book is a must, along with any that may follow.” — WhatCulture!

The Decay is coming, and Ian, a fifteen-year-old from the Northwestern Forests of the Region, must flee his home village or be melted into noxious brown goo. With the help of an eccentric mage and an annoyingly cheerful orphan, he escapes to the Capital, fending off quadrupedal orcs, superintelligent vultures, and some of the Region’s less desirable human residents. But when he encounters a mysterious stranger who reveals that the Region may not be what it appears, he must decide whether to stay faithful to his friends, or abandon them and seek the truth.

Not your typical fantasy or science fiction book, EPIC FANTASY 0.9b is a genre-bending trip through a strange and surprising realm, blending action, adventure, drama and humor into a fast-paced, unforgettable story.

A novella of 35,000 words. Includes world map.

Epic Fantasy 09b eBook Will Weisser

I had this book on my to-read list for some time, because I was so fascinated by the ideas in the description. I found it enjoyable and imaginative, with facile prose. However, I wouldn't say it fully lived up to the promise of the description.

As the book opens, it appears to be straight fantasy, but sci fi elements creep in gradually, until the reader finally discovers the meaning of the title of the book. Interesting mix. I liked the characters, and would have enjoyed a longer story, with more details and history about them.

There was some exciting action, though at a number of points the way it played out wasn't consistent with the way the scene was set up in my mind. That's not unusual for me, though by about the third time, I started to think it wasn't all me. If the author had set up the scene with just a few details, it might have been easier for me to read without having to stop and rearrange everything in my imagination.

The end is pretty easy for the reader to "get," but it goes way outside the small world of the characters, and I wasn't convinced that they would be so ready to accept this new understanding of reality.

Overall, I found it to be a good story, mostly well-written, in a beautiful and fascinating world, but with a few glitches. My suspicion (though I could be totally wrong about this) was that this is an earlier book by a talented and imaginative young writer, and I would have every expectation that his other books will be better. I'll keep Will Weisser on my to-read list.

Epic Fantasy 09b eBook Will Weisser Reviews

This is a unique genre bending novella that is truly entertaining. The author writes in an easy going style that quickly draws you into his fantasy world and its characters. A good deal of the story is told through Ian's eyes; he is a somewhat typical teenager that feels like a misfit and he is struggling to find his place in the world. All he is really sure about is that he is not going to let a group of elders decide for him.

When the Decay encroaches on their small village Pip and Ian hightail it out into the wilderness as fast as they can. Pip is an entertaining distraction to the devastation of the Decay; he is eternally optimistic and provides a balance to Ian's dour attitude and feeling of doom. Luckily they meet up with the local eccentric old mage, Giesling, who convinces them they all need to head towards the Capital to deliver the warning of the spreading Decay. The next traveler to join their band is a disgraced and expelled Squire named Simon who slowly reveals stories about the Region that our travelers have a hard time believing. Simon provides an interesting twist to the plot that takes this story into the sci-fi realm.

Essentially this is a coming of age story as Ian and Pip become seekers of truth as they try to survive this adventure wroth with danger, battles, deception and magic beyond their wildest dreams. I can see this turning into an awesome series.

FYI This book contains adult language.
I came across a couple of missing or extra words but no other significant issues.

Epic Fantasy 0.9b by Will Weisser is a fun story about a boy named Ian. He has always been a bit different, asking questions that no one else really thinks about. That has led him to be an outcast in his village and having a rather eccentric father hasn't really helped him in that regard. When The Decay wipes out his village he sets out with Giesling, the local mage, to get help at the capital. Along the way he meets up with Pip, another young man from his village, and Simon who seems to have knowledge that no one really should.

I really enjoyed the unique twist to this book. I had it figured out fairly early on (almost anyway I was off on a minor detail) but that didn't take away any of the enjoyment for the story. Ian and Pip are a bit mature for their ages, though the world that they live in and the things they have been through could probably explain that easy enough.

The book has a solid flow and I read it in a couple of sittings through the course of a day. I really looked forward to getting back to reading it when I had to take a break as I was curious to see what Will was going to do with the unique twist he put on what seemed to be a very standard fantasy tale.

If you are a fan of the fantasy genre and are looking for something a bit outside of the box this is a great book to check out. I'll be interested to see if Ian and Pip continue to have adventure or if this will turn out to be a one and done story world.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
From the first chapter, I liked the overarching metaphor the character of Ian represents a young man trying to understand the world, its workings, and his place in it. A man in search of understanding.
The action picks up pace right away, and there is a great variety of it. Plague, evil men, birds of prey...Ian, Pip, and Giesling have to face new challenges at every turn. The non stop action, entertaining as it is, also made me wish for a bigger back story on each character. This way when the crisis came, I would be even more invested in its outcome. Without deeper feel for the characters, the action had less of an impact on me than it would otherwise. But this is a novella, so I'm probably asking for something I find in novels.
The book's description of The Knights made me chuckle. The nobility turned out to be far less attractive than the lore would suggest. The book quickly builds an impression that the world the characters inhabit is broken, and the impression persists scene to scene.
The plot romps forward to a clever climax, the hero's journey leading him to land previously unexplored. The characters are convincing; therefore, the final chapters make a lot of sense, the link between fantasy world and real world well established by the author in an entertaining way. Good fantasy read, well edited and easy to follow.
