The Princess of Panchala A TerraMythos Novel eBook Tom D Wright Reviews
I have been fortunate enough to see another work by Mr. wright and have been impressed by what I have seen. This is an up and coming author and definitely one to watch. I was impress by this book's bright and fresh ideas. I hope more TerraMythos novels are in the pipeline.
The author of the story, Tom D Wright, discovered our genre recently. We welcome him to the community. He was introduced to LitRPG by one of our LitRPG ambassadors Matt Dinniman at Norwescon. Tom Wright wrote this story in 2014 and he’s relabeled it as LitRPG because he feels it fits the genre.
It almost is.
The premise of the story is a bit of a stretch. A girl transitions into an alternate dimension where her sister was never born. After an accident three years later, her mind is transferred into a VR MMO that has a historical Hindu theme.
This isn’t a bad story. It’s well written. The main character is likable and I found myself empathizing with her situation. The game theme of awakening artificial intelligence is interesting.
However, more than 60% of the story is about real life events that have nothing to do with the main characters quest to find her sister in the game world. Even if it does take awhile to get there, part of the story does exist in a video game world. Unfortunately, the thing that keeps it from being LitRPG is that most of the game mechanics of the game world are hidden away. Additionally, there’s no growth in power according to those mechanics because they’re not shown. After about the 50% mark, even those vague connections to the MMO game world mostly disappear and the main character's story reads like a journey through Hindu folklore.
This story was not written as LitRPG. It is an action mystery that just happens to take place in a video game. It would be the same story if the main character’s mind were transported to a Hindu fantasy alternate reality.
As general fiction, it would get a 6 out of 10. But as LitRPG it gets a 4 out of 10.
It's ok. It has no explanation of how a person get sucked into a computer game. While that's interesting and I can make that leap of faith thinking it'd be explained later so I kept reading. What really gets me is that somehow the game designer came up with the completely off the top idea of multiple parallel universes combined in the game, and then another worker just go "Okay" upon hearing it. Really? No normal people would have come up with that explanation immediately, let alone have someone else believe him without an eye brow raised. It seems so bogus that I have a hard time suspending my belief.
Overall I felt there are lots of sub plots that all went nowhere or I couldn't tell where they want to go.
A good first novel. I hope there is a sequel.
