Whew! Wow! Someone hold my hand!! Talk about getting your wonderful fix of angst! It's not for lacking here, and in a very pleasing way! Michele quickly got me totally engrossed with the characters and made this all seem so unbelievably real that I was forced to halt periodically or I would risk diving into the deep end of the pool without life support and unable to swim! I have to say, I do tend to get wholly involved with my stories but once in a while an author comes along with a story that just grabs unto my imagination and pulls me in as if it were happening to me outside of the book. I really did feel Stevie's emotions and wholeheartedly understood the mind battles he fights constantly. It was not difficult at all to comprehend the daily struggle each character faced, as if my life were evolving with theirs. Without being a spoiler, the author's note at the end gave heightened meaning to why everything seemed so real!If you want angst at every corner, not having a clue as to what anvil will strike the fire next, realize that life is irony, then you have chosen the right read. I cannot wait to read more of Ms. Montgomery and her well played characters!!

Readers expecting a straightforward "gay man seeks fatherhood" story of angst, warmth, and fuzziness, which this is not, might want to visit Jessewave's for a full review. (Link is not allowed by , sorry.)
The plot arc with the most page time involves domestic abuse, and if you don't mind walking into that cold, you'll enjoy this book more than I did. The main review outlines other serious issues with the story, including character development, plot coherence, and triggery plot points.
I often find it difficult to review this author's work because there are surprises it seems when you least expect them and I would hate to ruin that for other readers. This story gets into adopting children, and how difficult that can be sometimes for gays. My partner and I, after being together for twenty years, have discussed this and the reason we've never actually acted on it is because we know about the obstacles involved. After this book, we'll be talking about it again no doubt. There is also plenty of romance and sexy scenes as well. I've been a fan of this author's work for a long time now and I think it's because she writes with a natural everyday voice...if that makes sense. There's nothing contrived or forced. And I tend to lean toward authors who have this kind of voice.
I love Michele books. She has a passion and love for the characters that comes across in every word she writes.
XBar is truly a spectacular read. To say I feel in love with Steven and Jorge is an understatement. Their journey is one that needed to be told and I can't think of a better author then Michele to tell of the fight for love, acceptance, equality and happiness. This is a magnificent story that will make you cry, laugh and ultimately give you a sense of hope.
